We’re a small, family-run butchers shop in the countryside village of Outwood, Surrey. Our family works alongside our fantastic team of colleagues who have become a very important part of the Outwood Butchers family.
For us, butchery isn’t simply a trade - it’s in the blood.
Our family’s butchering heritage can be traced back to the late 1800s, with generations of knowledge, skill and passion passed down through the family. We’re incredibly proud to carry that tradition forward today, combining old-fashioned values and traditional skills along with the knowledge and expertise of modern butchery.
Throughout the week, our doors are open to our customers.
We take great pride in offering a wide and traditional range of quality produce, from our locally sourced meats and homemade pastries to fresh free range eggs, artisan cheeses and plenty more.
Alongside our butchery and shop, we’ve been providing outside catering for over 10 years.
Over the years, our menus have grown and developed, but we’ve always believed in wholesome and good food!
Butchery has always been in our family. We can trace our Butchering heritage back to the late 1800’s.
Four generations no less, of Waltons have cut, carved and chopped their way from their roots in Market Bosworth, Warwickshire through Hinckley, Leicestershire and Coalville working their way steadily south to Outwood.
Just take a look at some of our pictures
In the year 1891 downtown Market Bosworth, Leicestershire. Here you can see the Long family market who is Williams grandad and Uncle on his mums side.
This was their usual setup at the market with such an array of meats to choose from !
Now, this was the meat delivery vehicle of its time back in 1902. The 10-year-old boy on the far right is Williams Uncle Bob.
Part of Uncle Bobs daily routine, before setting off on the morning deliveries, was to retrieve the horse from its paddock.
One particularly foggy morning, Bob went out to fetch him. This horse would usually be waiting right at the gate, ready to start his morning shift, but Bob could not see him anywhere. So, he set off and did a full lap of the paddock in search of him.
When Bob finally returned to where he had started, there was the horse standing just to the right of the gate, waiting patiently. It seemed the horse had been watching Bob the whole time, quite happy to let him complete his morning lap of the paddock first.
From left to right: Michael Walton, Roger Clark, the famous Ford rally car champion! William Walton, Charlie Walton, and far right, Peter Walton.
Back in 1974, the four Walton brothers were busy running three shops in Hinckley, supplying thousands of customers, as well as hotels, restaurants and schools.
In the early 2000s, William took over Outwood Butchers. A few years later, Amy joined the family business. Now, with William retired, Amy is joined by her children, Archie and Eva, to carry on the family business.
On the Titsey Estate, you wll find a herd of pedigree Sussex cattle, recognised by their beautiful, distinctive mahogany red coats, which never vary in colour. They are believed to be one of the oldest native pedigree British cattle breeds, dating back to well before 1878.
There is a rumour that back in 1066 when the Normans came on an extended holiday they also enjoyed the native red breed which may have inadvertently been one of the reasons which lead them to stay.
The herd recently was just at the Edenbridge & Oxted Agriculture show on August bank holiday where they took home both first place in Sussex junior bull and Sussex male championship.
We have been working with Bill, the farmer at Titsey Estate, for over 20 years now.
Bill has been a farmer all his life, and the dedication and care he puts into the herd really does show. If you have ever had the pleasure of seeing them happily grazing on the estates land around Oxted, you will know just how lovely they are.
The calves are born throughout the year on the farm where they are reared with their mothers. The steers are typically aged between 18 to 24 months before they are sent off to the local abattoir.
From there we then receive the four quarters of each carcass back at our butchers, where we then hang the beef for a minimum of 30 days.
Once matured, we break down each carcass ourselves into all the different cuts and joints, which are then sold directly to our customers in the shop.
Knowing where our beef comes from, knowing the people who rear it, and supporting the local farmers we have built relationships with over many years.
Whole carcass butchery also known as nose to tail butchery is something we have always known and done here at Outwood Butchers and are truly proud to be a part of.
